Fixed braces vs clear aligners: which is right for your smile?

Clear aligners like Invisalign are popular for their removability - but fixed braces offer unique advantages. They deliver consistent force, can correct a wider range of bite issues, and in some cases work faster than aligners.

Ceramic braces blend beautifully with natural tooth colour for a refined, subtle appearance, while metal braces are ideal for complex orthodontic needs.

If you’re unsure which option is best, we’ll compare fixed braces with clear aligners during your consultation.

What exactly are fixed braces - and how do they work?

Fixed braces gently guide your teeth into aligned positions through a series of brackets and archwires that apply controlled, consistent pressure. They remain on your teeth for the duration of treatment, ensuring continuous movement without relying on patient removal.

Your orthodontic plan may involve:

  • Ceramic (tooth-coloured) brackets
  • Metal brackets
  • Light, flexible archwires
  • Precision detailing for final tooth positioning

Dr Izabella Romanowska assesses not just the alignment of your teeth, but how they balance with your lips, gum line and facial proportions.

Ceramic braces: the elegant, discreet option

Ceramic braces offer the same orthodontic strength as metal braces but use tooth-coloured or translucent brackets for a significantly less noticeable appearance.

They are ideal for:

  • Professionals
  • Patients who prefer a subtle aesthetic
  • Those not suitable for clear aligners
  • Individuals wanting precise control with discreet styling

Ceramic braces pair beautifully with later-stage cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening or veneers once alignment is complete.

Metal braces: the classic choice for durability and precision

Metal fixed braces remain the gold standard for complex orthodontic cases. They are highly effective for:

  • Significant overcrowding
  • Bite corrections
  • Rotated or severely misaligned teeth
  • Teen orthodontics

These braces use advanced lightweight materials for improved comfort and smoother tooth movement compared to older designs.

  • Minimise very sticky or hard foods
  • Attend routine dental hygiene appointments

We’ll show you how to brush and floss effectively around brackets. Regular dental hygiene appointments also help keep your mouth healthy.
